Jonathan Hess thought of the name Sesquipedelians which means people who use words that are difficult to pronounce.

The Sesquipedelians #1-
The first incarnation of the band included Cathy Livingston and Kaushik Swaminathan as the primary vocalists, guitarists and songwriters, Kaushik Swaminathan Cat and Kaushik backed one another up on vocals and guitar. Jonathan Hess joined the band as a bassist, and Vivek played the drums. This band formed for the sole purpose of backing Cathy and Kaushik at Kresge Day in 1987, which was an annual all-day party at the University of California, Santa Cruz, of which all of the band members were students.

The Sesquipedelians #2-
Cathy moved to San Francisco after graduating from UCSC. Cathy(vocals, guitar, songwriting), Ed Brister (drums, bass, backing vocals), and Jonathan Hess(bass, vocals,songwriting), re-formed the Sesquipedelians in the Fall of 1989. They recorded a group of songs written by Cathy and Jonathan with the acclaimed producer Greg Freeman at his Lowdown Studios. The Sesquipedelians played a number of gigs in San Francisco. Jonathan left the group within a year.
